The University of Southern Mississippi women’s basketball team may be in the offseason, but players on the team already have their eyes set on reaching greater heights next season. Coming off of a historic season, players recap the season, share their thoughts and their early preparations to improve individually as well as a team.
A “true team” describes Southern Miss women’s basketball and center Kierra Jordan on the growth of the team.
” Even though you lose a big player before when you come in with eight new players at the same time with that big player and everybody have team chemistry, you really don’t know what you get out of your team,” Jordan said.
Michigan defeated the Lady Eagles in the 2015 Women’s National invitational Tournament Elite Eight, but for Lashyra Cotton, she will not quit during the offseason.
” I’m definitely going to focus on rehab, get my shoulders back right, work on my strength and conditioning and get more stronger and physical,” Cotton said.
Cotton also says Voche` Martin played a big part in her growth as a player.
” She’s a strong-willed person, she started the offseason struggling but she’s an amazing example of how you can come back up,” Martin said. ” She finished the season amazingly and as a leading scorer and producer.”
With the motto “reaching higher”, head coach Joye Lee-McNelis says the season helped put the program on a national platform.
“To be included in a group of 16 teams that will play before anyone else in the entire country in the 2015 Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament, that is such an honor for this team,” McNelis said.
With ten returners for next year, McNelis plans to work on skill development with them, hoping to build off last season’s success.
” That will be our focal point this summer , so that we can take our players to the next level, and hopefully with our returning players, and some of the players we have coming in, you hope some budding stars will rise,” McNelis said.
