Sixteen high school students came to Southern Miss for the 2014 “Freedom Summer” high school journalism workshop, sponsored by the University of Southern Mississippi School of Mass Communication and Journalism.

Starting on June 15, students have spent the week learning about different areas of journalism and using what they learned to complete duties and projects in commemorating Freedom Summer.

During the workshop, students get the opportunity to learn how to write  news stories, use social media, create broadcast news stories, interview and listen to individuals who played a role in Freedom Summer,  engage in photography and understand the overall meaning of  what a journalist is in society today.

This workshop is a portion of the festivities in conjunction with the Freedom Summer celebration, which concludes on Sunday with a closing ceremony. Below, you will find pictures of students learning throughout the week.
